Just been discharged from hospital

Some of you may have been aware that I've been in hospital for a few days, I was rushed in on Sunday night for an emergency appendectomy (removal of the appendix!).

I had been in pain all weekend, Sunday night was absolute agony, so went to casualty and a few hours later I was admitted. The appendix had ruptured and was oozing crap into my stomach cavity. It was pretty bad, but they caught it just in time and thankfully due to the skill of the surgeon I should make a full recovery.

So where does this leave my training? Good question, it was one of the first thoughts that entered my head when I was admitted into hospital. According to the surgeon and the consultant I will be out of serious training for 4-6 weeks. Does this leave me enough time to get ready for IM Austria on 4th July? My coach seems to think so, although I know I won't be able to perform like I would have wanted. I might be able to jump in the pool in 2 weeks time for some gentle swimming (drills perhaps) and maybe in 3-4 weeks I could do some easy spinning on the bike, so it's not a toal lost cause. It is a little disappointing, but I know I've laid some good base over the last 10 weeks so perhaps I won't loose all of that. We'll have to wait and see! If training doesn't resume as quickly as hoped, then maybe The Vitruvian will be my A race (with TurboMan), who knows?

Sorry to hear that Frank. I'm not a medic but your recovery is what's important now, and making sure you're fit and well again BEFORE trying to pick up your previous level of training is essential, otherwise you will just put yourself back again.

Recover well, there's still plenty of time between now and your IM date; yes you may need to reevaluate your targets but I doubt it's a complete lost cause.

You could always come and join us in Barcelona in October. I can pace you on the bike if you want?

These things only make us more determined to finish what we started. So it's afew weeks of from training....you can still do core work, relax, recover and hit it hard when your back. 4 weeks is less than a month away.....so use things like sprint races to help you get fit quick and then back onto the big miles.

Remember you have 17 hours to complete the course.....why finish in 10 when you paid for all 17.Get your moneys worth. The winner has the same medal as the last finisher

Frank,
recover well mate thats the important thing. Once recovered then re-think your plans. It should still be ok as the main base work should be covered by now. Just re-evaluate your finish time, thats what I have had to do.

Good luck
Daz

Blimey Frank! Sounds like a dodgy time mate. I would be frustrated in your shoes but hang in there. First Ironman is a voyage of discovery - so I am told! And i reckon that you will come out of the IM with some great fitness adaptation. hence a super quick Vit could be on the cards. Stay focussed. I know Mike m is a coach and all that but if I were you, I would stay away from the core stuff for a while!

Thanks guys for your wise words. I'm intending to use this time away from triathlon to re-evaluate my race goals and perhaps look at some brain training too, the mental side is all important I think. I'm with Sags, there's no way I'll be doing core work during this time, maybe I'll just work on the guns instead! Train smart all!

Frank, I'm sorry to hear you've been in hospital. Neill told me whilst we were away and I immediately wondered about your IM plans.

Make sure you recover well. You've got a really solid base of training so all is not lost!

Dude, bad one. On the plus side you'll have a cool new scar to show off in your 2 piece...
