I was asked recently to trial a new wetsuit made by a new British company called Zone3. The founder of Zone3 is a guy called James Lock who is racing elite this year and raced in the Corus Series last year too (first out of the water at the Strathclyde super sprint race).
I received the wetsuit from Zone3 last week and upon opening the parcel I couldn’t wait to try it out, just from the look and feel of the suit I liked what I saw already. The wetsuit is the Aspire model, the lowest spec of the range, but from reading the supplied information it seemed to be jam packed with features. I had asked for size small and I think I made a mistake with my selection, however after 5 minutes of pulling and twisting I got the suit on and to be honest, it was very snug around the shoulders. But this wasn’t an issue and is testament to the quality and flexibility of the suit that I had no restriction in the shoulders and the neck line was very comfortable with no sign of chaffing.
The suit was very buoyant in the water and I felt like I skimming across the surface at great speed (for me anyway!). My body felt very balanced in the water and my swim set seemed to fly by. I had expected to overheat in the suit, but my body temperature seemed to stay constant, almost regulated. On exiting the pool I imagined I was in T1 and tried a quick exit from the suit. Thankfully, the suit was easier to get off than it was to get on and slipped off with ease. The legs had a nifty diagonal cut to the material which allowed for an easy exit of the feet and legs from the suit, this little innovation seemed so basic yet so effective and I wonder why the larger manufacturers haven’t thought of this (yet).
Overall, I was very impressed with the Aspire, from the quality of the design (the quick release leg cuff design is excellent) through to the multi-thickness neoprene sections allowing for a more balanced position in the water. Ultimately it is an individual choice for the consumer when buying a new wetsuit, but whichever way you decide to go, the Aspire from Zone3 is a hard one to beat!
